What if wood floor is being layed on cement - no joist underneath to follow.
make sure you put down a vaper barrier so your wood don't suck up moisture from the cement, Home depot sells a sub floor for cement

A glued direct wood floor 1/2 inch and thinner can be put any which wat you d like.
