We're looking to lay pre-engineered wood throughout the house, which is a Victorian house in North london, so will be on old floorboards (no we don't want to sand them down!). We'd love to find someone competent to do this for us
Incidentally we are not quite sure what to do about the stairs, so any thoughts welcome: can you have carpet on the stairs and wood at the top and bottom without it looking stupid?

May I suggest you look for a source of recycled wood? It will take some imagination, but that way some of your wood will be the right age for the house. I don't know what pre-engineered wood is, but if you can recycle, I think that will be the best.

Are the stairs really tatty? Could you paint them? If you do use a carpet, something like sisal of jute might work better than fabric.

Good luck finding someone competent. Perhaps you could enquire for graduates at your local college.

Condo is in Orlando, Florida.

Not only check with the condo association about being allowed to have the hardwood floors, But check with the original builder of the building.

Most likely, the existing floor weighs about the same as hardwood, but that greatly depends on the type of wood you're planning on using.

Worst case, get some of the fake wood flooring. It'll look the same, and you won't have to worry about the weight or the noise.

**A friend who is helping me has an air compressor and several pneumatic nailers, but not a "specific" tongue & groove hardwood nailer. (You know the one where you hit it with the mallet…) Installing 500 Sq/ft. Can just a normal nailer be used? Advantages/Disadvantages?

You really need a flooring nailer for this. Doesn't really need to be pneumatic. It would be easier, but 500 sf would not be too bad for a manual nailer.

Proper nail placement is important for flooring. It needs to go in at an angle to hold the flooring tight. A flooring nailer helps you get the flooring together tight as well. Instead of just pulling a trigger to place the nail, you hit the nailer with a mallet, driving the piece of flooring tight against the other and placing the nail in one action.

Don't turn down the finish nailer yet. You will need to nail the first and last few runs down through the face. You can't get the flooring nailer into the proper position next to a wall.

Our house has very damaged (stains, *lots* of screws) hardwood floors that aren't worth salvaging. Possible to install a real wood ‘floating’ floor or something over the current floors without having to rip them up? If we went with a laminate (which I would like to avoid but may not have a choice) what is the best brand? Thanks!

Go with real hardwood and leave the laminates alone. In 5-7 years you'll be trying to figure out what to do with the laminates and you'll end up having to tear them out. Put the real hardwood flooring in over what you already have in place. You really can do it yourself with a chop saw, brad gun and a rubber mallet. Some come pre-finished, some you'll have to sand and finish yourself. But finishing a floor really is not difficult and can be completed in 24 hours.

I believe all laminate flooring is designed to be installed as a floating floor. This is due to the relative expansion and contraction of the laminate relative to the sub-flooring

Laminate is either glued together or uses a snap together design. I have installed the snap together type and it is easy to install. Most glue types are more difficult and messy. You need to hold the pieces together until the glue sets and you also have to wipe up any excess squeeze out.

I have a kitchen floor with 12" ceramic tiles. I would like to install a wood floor over the ceramic tile. I want to avoid the mess (and expense) of ripping out all the ceramic tile. If this can be done, please suggest possible companies or reference materials that I can research. Thank you.

at home depo they have fake wood [it looks real i sware]. you can call someone there and they can put it on for you. all they have to do is put a sticky paste on it. it will be done within three days. i had tiles on my floor and now it looks great with the "wood."

Teeter Hang Ups E11057 EZ-Up Gravity Boots and Rack
The EZ-Up Inversion System offers a full body stretch and is a great tool for inverted exercises (like crunches, sit-ups and squats). In fact, full range inverted sit-ups are ten times tougher than horizontal sit-ups, with minimal load on the back. The EZ-Up Inversion Rack installs in a door frame, but does not interfere with the function of the door. (Note: The Rack must be installed in a solid wood doorframe constructed according to national building code standards). The Rack takes up no floor space, which is ideal for cramped living quarters. The EZ-Up Inversion System comes with an instructional DVD and an 88-page medical research book on inversion written for nonmedical people.
